Clinical Laboratory in Houston: Walk-In Blood Tests
Yes, you can get blood tests in Houston with no appointment and no insurance. At Clínica Hispana Airline, 934 E Tidwell Rd, your sample is drawn the day you walk in, seven days a week from 9 AM to 9 PM, and our medical team explains the results to you in Spanish or English.
What nobody explains is what each panel actually measures, and why your doctor ordered one and not another. That is what this guide is for.
What does each test measure?
Glucose and hemoglobin A1C
Fasting glucose is a snapshot of one moment. A1C is different: it reflects your average blood sugar over the past two to three months, so you cannot fix it by eating well the night before. The CDC places prediabetes between 5.7% and 6.4%, and diabetes at 6.5% or above.
It is the single most useful test we run, because prediabetes has no symptoms and can still be reversed.
Lipid panel
Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. The USPSTF recommends lipid screening for adults aged 40 to 75, and earlier if there is diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking or a family history.
The number that matters is not total cholesterol but the relationship between LDL and HDL, which is what we walk you through when you get your result.
Metabolic panel
Sodium, potassium, chloride, creatinine and liver enzymes. This is the panel that tells you how your kidneys and liver are coping, and the first one to shift when diabetes or high blood pressure has gone unmanaged for years.
Thyroid (TSH)
Fatigue that never lifts, weight changes you cannot explain, feeling cold all the time, hair loss. These get blamed on stress, and they are often thyroid. We start with TSH and expand from there depending on the result. If that sounds like you, see our thyroid testing and treatment.
Complete blood count
Red cells, white cells and platelets. It picks up anemia — common in women of childbearing age, according to MedlinePlus — and infections your body is fighting without you noticing.
Do I need to fast?
It depends on the test:
- Lipid panel and fasting glucose: yes, 8 to 12 hours with no food. Water is fine.
- A1C, thyroid, complete blood count: no fasting needed.
- Comprehensive metabolic panel: usually yes.
If you are unsure, come fasting in the morning. You can always eat after the draw, never the other way around. And do not stop your medication on your own before a test — ask us first.
Do I need insurance?
No. We work with direct, affordable pricing, no insurance required, and we accept cash and cards. Ask what your test costs before the draw so there are no surprises.
You also do not need another doctor to order it. If you want your glucose or cholesterol checked, we will run it.
How often should I repeat them?
- No risk factors: once a year, with your general checkup.
- With diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol: every 3 to 6 months, which is the follow-up we run in chronic condition care.
- With new symptoms: whenever they show up, without waiting for the annual checkup.
What does the visit look like?
You walk in, register, have your sample drawn, and leave. No appointment, no three-hour waiting room, no insurance paperwork. When results are ready we let you know and explain them in your language, comparing them against your previous results if you have tested with us before.
That comparison is what actually matters: a cholesterol of 210 means one thing if last year you were at 240, and something very different if you were at 180.
