Stool Tests

When it makes sense

• Diarrhea lasting more than a few days, or that comes and goes
• Abdominal pain or cramping with no clear cause
• Unexplained weight loss
• Anal itching, especially in children
• After travel or drinking water of uncertain origin
• Fatigue with anemia, which can come from slow digestive bleeding

What it can detect

• **Parasites and eggs:** giardia, amoebas, pinworms and others
• **Occult blood:** bleeding not visible to the naked eye
• **Bacteria** causing intestinal infection
• Fat in stool, which points to absorption problems

Why treating it correctly matters

Intestinal parasites are common and often get treated by guesswork, with whatever remedy someone recommended. The problem is that they do not all respond to the same medication: identifying which one you have prevents months of wrong treatment and returning symptoms.

How the sample is collected

We give you the container and the instructions. Some studies call for more than one sample on different days, because parasites are not shed continuously and a single sample can come back negative even when they are present. If that applies, we explain it when we hand you the container.

In children

It is one of the most useful studies in childhood. If there is nighttime anal itching or recurring stomach pain, it is worth doing.
