Urine test and blood test
The urine test is the first one used and detects hCG from the time your period is late. The **blood** test is more sensitive: it detects pregnancy earlier and, more importantly, can **measure the amount** of hormone, which is what helps when there are questions about how things are progressing.
When to test
The most reliable point is the first day your period is late. Before that the hormone level may still be too low and give a negative even when you are pregnant. If the test is negative and your period still does not come, **repeat it in a week**: it is the most useful advice and the one most people skip.
