What it is for

An EKG shows the heart's rhythm and rate, and reveals arrhythmias, signs of a past heart attack, enlargement of the chambers, or changes that come with years of high blood pressure. It does not catch everything — some heart problems do not show on a resting EKG — but it is the first and most accessible step.

When it makes sense

What the study is like

Ten adhesive electrodes are placed on the chest, arms and legs, under a minute is recorded, and they come off. **You feel nothing**: the machine only listens, it sends no current. The whole visit takes a few minutes.

What happens next
