The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that regulates metabolism. When it runs fast or slow, the symptoms get blamed on stress, on age or on "being run down" for years. At Clínica Hispana Airline we work it up with blood tests, walk-in.
When it runs slow (hypothyroidism)
Fatigue that rest does not fix, gaining weight without changing your diet, **feeling cold when nobody else does**, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, low mood or mental sluggishness. It is the more common one, especially in women, and it settles in so gradually that it is hard to notice.
When it runs fast (hyperthyroidism)
Restlessness, palpitations, losing weight while eating the same or more, sweating, trembling hands, trouble sleeping.
How it is worked up
We start with **TSH**, the most sensitive test, and expand to free T4 and T3 depending on the result. If there is a lump or the gland feels enlarged, we add a [thyroid ultrasound](/services/ultrasonido). No fasting is needed to measure TSH.
Treatment works well, but it needs monitoring
Hypothyroidism is treated with replacement hormone and most people live completely normal lives. What it does require is **adjusting the dose with periodic lab work**: a dose that worked two years ago can end up too low or too high.
Before assuming it is the thyroid
