The two ways to do it
- **Skin test (PPD).** A small amount is injected under the skin of the forearm, and you have to **come back in 48 to 72 hours** for someone on the medical team to read it. Reading it yourself does not count: what is measured is the firmness, not the redness, and that distinction is what gets misread at home.
- **Blood test (IGRA).** A single draw, no return visit needed. It is the right choice if you were given the **BCG** vaccine, because that vaccine can make the skin test positive without there being any infection.
Many people vaccinated with BCG in their home country get an unnecessary scare from a PPD. If that applies to you, say so beforehand and the right test gets chosen.
If it is positive
A positive result means contact with the bacteria, **not necessarily active disease**. Most people with a positive test have latent infection: the bacteria are dormant, cause no symptoms and are not contagious. To tell the two apart, a **chest X-ray** is done and symptoms are assessed.
Important: if you have ever had a positive PPD, the skin test should not be repeated. Say so and it gets resolved with a different study.
