Studies we perform
- **Pregnancy (sonogram):** confirm the pregnancy, see the heartbeat, date the weeks and follow development.
- **Pelvic:** uterus and ovaries, for pelvic pain, irregular bleeding or suspected cysts or fibroids.
- **Abdominal:** liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas and spleen. This is the study ordered for persistent abdominal pain or stones.
- **Thyroid and soft tissue:** nodules and lumps you can feel.
How to prepare
It depends on the study, and we tell you when you arrive. For the **abdominal**, no food for 6 to 8 hours beforehand is recommended, because food in the stomach and intestinal gas block the image. For the **pelvic and early pregnancy** studies it is the opposite: come with a full bladder, which acts as an acoustic window. Thyroid and soft tissue need no preparation.
Wear comfortable two-piece clothing if you can, so you do not have to change completely.
What the study is like
Gel is applied to the skin and the transducer glides over it. **It does not hurt and causes no cramping**, and the gel wipes off afterward. It takes ten to twenty minutes depending on what is being examined.
If the study finds something that calls for a specialist, we tell you and help direct the referral. Interpretation and instructions come from our medical team, in your language.
