Influenza
The flu shot is reformulated every season because the virus changes. That is why **last year's shot does not work** and it has to be repeated each fall. It takes about two weeks to take effect, so getting it before the season starts is what makes sense.
It does not cause the flu. What some people feel for a day or two — a sore arm, some tiredness — is the normal immune response, not an infection.
Tetanus toxoid (Td / Tdap)
Tetanus does not spread from person to person: it enters through wounds contaminated with soil, rust or dirty material. The booster is given **every 10 years**, and sooner if you have a deep wound and it has been more than five years since your last dose.
